 | About Jury Service
 | What do I do about the jury notice?
Many of the questions are answered on the jury card, but this will have a fuller
explanation.
 | If you wish to claim an exemption, disk the exemption and return the card by mailing it
back. The exemptions listed are the only ones allowed by law and include
 | persons over the age of seventy (70) years, |
 | persons with the legal custody of a child or children under the age of ten (10) years
who must leave the child without adequate supervision is serving, |
 | Students of public or private secondary schools, |
 | Persons enrolled and in actual attendance at an institution of higher education, |
 | An officer or employee of the Senate or House of Representatives or other agency of the
legislative branch of the state government, and |
 | The primary caretaker of an invalid unable to care for themself. |
|
 | Others are not qualified to be members of the jury. If you do not meet the minimum
requirements set out below, please call (674-1208) or e-mail the court's staff and explain under which
of these reasons you are not qualified:
 | You must be a United States citizen living in Taylor County (military personnel
stationed here are not disqualified.) |
 | You must be of sound mind and good moral character. |
 | You must be able to read and write. |
 | You must not have been convicted of any felony. |
 | You must not be under indictment or other legal accusation for theft or any felony. |
|
 | If you are not exempt or disqualified, please come to court when directed to. At that
time you may explain other reasons jury service would be difficult for you at this time. |
 |
Note that you are directed on the jury card to call 674-1309 between 5:00 P.M. Friday
and 8:00 A.M. Monday preceding your appearance date. A recorded message will let you know
if your summons has been cancelled. |
|
 | How do I get off jury duty?
Why would you want to? Jury service is one of the greatest privileges you have as a
citizen of this country, a precious right to be guarded diligently. However, if you need
to be excused because of a conflict with this particular time, read the instructions in
the section above. If you have specific questions, please feel free to e-mail the court.
How long will
I serve if I get picked on a jury?
Our juries normally serve one or two days although trials have been known to last as
long as a week. Jurors are never sequestered in this court (meaning kept away from family
over night) and normally they are free to see to personal business during the noon resess.
